A group of tourists is blocking the street. The guide is taking on a group much larger then allowed in this area.
The city knows how bad things have gotten in Amsterdam. They have put up signs in English and Dutch, and also started a campaign to tell tourists that people actually live here. Unfortunately the city didn’t include additional police to actually enforce our laws and rules. Without it, this is nothing more then yet another expensive Hail Mary Campaign.
Pride 2019 is here! The cause is great and Amsterdam should stay gay capital of the world forever and ever. Yet it is very saddening to notice that in the midst of the climate crisis and with the scientific knowledge about the environmental damage balloons cause, they are still being used at Pride and even by our politicians.
The canal walls and bridges in Amsterdam are in horrible condition. Out of 200 kilometers of canal walls, 135 kilometers have to be restored. And out of 850 bridges, 750 are not up to code. The city council has decided to restore the historical canal walls with prefab: brick glued to concrete. Even though the Amsterdam Canal District is part of UNESCO World Heritage, the city council feels the canal walls aren’t a monument.
